Have these hipster lesbos gone Metal?? Not really, but you could think so based on their new shirt design!

Current listening: Tegan & Sara: Walking With a Ghost

I wouldn’t even say metal, but rather suggest any Crust Punk band hailing form Portland, Japan (!) or MONTREAL!

This could actually have been the cover of an Inepsy release or Inepsy t-shirt and with Inepsy hailing from Montreal (so does Sara) there might even be a link here??

BYE New York!

HELLO California!
Photobucket

I know I’m waaaaay behind on the “blog front”.. Things have just been crazy the last month(s), which again leaves me with a lot of stuff to blog about and first out a little update from CALIFORNIA!

I’t is always AMAZING to be back in LA, one of my favourite places in the world.
I arrived early Monday morning and already when I flew in I felt this rush with happiness. I LOVE NYC, but sometimes I feel trapped and claustrophobic there, at least when it’s raining cats and dogs and there’s “tornados” chasing you down every avenue.
The phone started calling early and at 7pm it was time to meet up with some friends from Century Media Records for a cocktail at the Rainbow before we rushed off to see Steel Panther/Metal Skool. “The Skool” was cool enough and it’s certainly entertaining and the guitarist is hilarious, but the entire naked chicks on stage and “naked too the backstage” jokes are a tad old and too cheesy for “the old hag” me.. or maybe “the hag” is just too cool for school??

Metal Skool!!
Steel Panther and a bunch of topless girls was right behind us, but Gayane’s “balcony” is blocking the view..

California & Fear.  I love you both!

Waiting for Holly in halloweeeeeenie land!

   Join our Facebook Group

Current listening: Madball –Look My Way

I was meeting up with my girl Holly at Three of Cups, a little loud metal/rock/hardcore joint in the East Village
On my way to “Cups” Holly texted me saying she’d be late so I just went inside and ordered a drink just in time to ease the social anxiety lurking inside, and kept my fingers crossed hoping Holly would get there asap!
When I wanted to pay for my drink the bartender nodded towards the guy next to me and said he’d already paid. I kindly thanked him for his generosity and focused on drinking my wine, looking REAL busy (and possibly deaf) to avoid any kind of continued conversation.

I’m really not a bitch, but why can’t people sense when one is not interested in making friends or boring conversations?
I mean, if you’re seated in a bar, alone, for more than 5 minutes does that automatically mean that you’re single, desperate and willing to go home with whoever buying you a beer?

Mr Duh: So are you here alone?

Me: Not really, I’m waiting for my friend.

Mr duh: Where do you live?

Me: Brooklyn

Mr Duh: Is your friend from Brooklyn too?

Me: No, Bronx

Mr Duh: Bronx? How do you know anyone from Bronx when you live in Brooklyn?

Me: So if you live in Brooklyn you’d only know “Brooklyn” people? (Stupid move! I asked the dude a question, which could be mistaken for making a conversation, even if said in an extremely annoyed tone)

Mr Duh: Yeah?

Me: Well, I’m originally from Norway and she’s originally from Syracuse. (I hoped this would keep him busy thinking long enough for Holly to get her ass there).

Mr Duh: So, is she a gipsy or something?

Me: Huh? What?

Mr Duh: Is she a gipsy or something, since she’s in a Sircus? (I might have pronounced Syracuse a little weird, but c’mon!!)

I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry.
I texted Holly in frustration, and terribly horrified by the thought of being stuck with Mr duh for more than 5 more seconds.

So while trying to look extremely busy texting Holly the guy did of course start a conversation about my iPhone.

Mr Duh: I noticed a crack on the display. Is it still working?

Me: I guess I wouldn’t sit here texting my friend if not?

Mr Duh: So what happened?

Me: I threw it after someone (which is not the truth. I accidentally dropped it on the ground while looking for my keys. I was just hoping the other version would scare him off, but it was a very unsuccessful attempt.)

Mr Duh: So what kind of music do you have on it?

Me: all kinds of music.

Mr Duh: But what do you prefer listen to?

Me: Hardcore, metal, hip-hop

Mr Duh: Hardcore what? Hardcore metal, hardcore industry, hardcore porn (yeah the dude was trying to be funny).

Me: Hardcore! (I was already very annoyed by this fellah and in this second I was actually, thanks to the Dj, singing along to Madball so the whole hardcore mystery shouldn’t be that hard to figure out)

Him: I haven’t heard of a band called Hardcore?

I just gave him an odd look and question mark eyebrows and hoped his head would explode and decorate Manhattan, Brooklyn AND Queens.

Mr Duh: Can you name a few bands?

I was really annoyed by this point and listed a few bands just to make him shut the fuck up!!
He stopped me up when I got to Sick Of It All - “oh yeah! I have heard of Sick of it All!”

Me: Congratulations!

And then he started rambling about a Van Halen show in New Jersey….

HOLLY where the fuck are you?!?!?!?!

All of a sudden there’s a giant balloon penis (leftovers from Halloween) flying through the room in “our” direction and where do you think it ended its journey? In my FACE of course!!!

Mr Duh was of course super excited about the whole penis situation and asked me if I believed the small, white balloons was supposed to be “the sperm coming out of the penis”.
Luckily Holly arrived shortly after, if not I would have showed the entire balloon penis down Mr Duh’s throat.

Shortly after Holly’s arrival out of nowhere this crazy looking lady starts talking to me about her yesterdays Shenanigans. I nodded and listened carefully, cus at this point I would willingly talk to anyone that could keep me occupied and release me from any balloon penis enthusiast.
While listening to her, I notice two huge beer glass with some clear content in front of me, so I asked the lady if the water was hers. “Yes, well it’s not water it’s vodka” and grabbed one glass right away!

I was amazed! This lady just bought gallons with straight up vodka. I “spinned” around on my bar stool to tell Holly about this wonder as I knew she’d be very amused, and as expected she got extremely excited. When I “spinned” back the lady was halfway gulping down the full glass of vodka (she took it all in one big gulp).. I was in shock, Holly on the other hand got turned on!!

Disgusted but still overly impressed I had to ask how the hell she managed to do that:

Vodka Lady: I’m half Norwegian!

OF COURSE - it all made totally sense to me now. True Norwegian VIKING BLOOD!!

Here’s the ½ Norwegian vodka Lady with her empty glass (she finished up glass number two right after this), and if you look up in the right corner you can see the sperm balloons coming out of the giant balloon penis..

This picture was probably taken in the second Holly entered the bar and released me from Mr Duh)

A blizzard beast in the Classy Old Hags Department!

   Join our Facebook Group

Current listening: Die Toten Hosen – Love and A Molotov Cocktail

The other day I managed to drag my dear friend and co-founder of the Classy (ehh.. Crazy?) Old Hags Club , Raffaelle, with me for a hardcore show in Brooklyn. Getting her along to Brooklyn would normally be a challenge itself because Raff is very pro downtown Manhattan/L.E.S. and to her a trip to Brooklyn equals a full day adventure that require some planning ahead and of course “good shoes and a push-up bra” (Ha!!).  She’s also prepping for a upcoming cruise (to celebrate her and Drew’s 6 year anniversary) by going on a crazy(NO needed) diet - no carbs and no alcohol for a month (yeah, classy old hag turned crazy)!!
Although she’s a total rock chick (classy but still very rock n roll), played in a couple of bands (Cycle Sluts from Hell being the most famous) her boyfriend Drew used to play in a few Hardcore bands (Crippled Youth /Bold, Youth Of Today) she’s really not that into hardcore herself.

The Classy Old Hags anno 2006

Photobucket

But surprisingly Raffaelle came along without any hassle, I picked her up in a cab and Voilà we were off for our expedition to Europa (in case anyone’s confused we’re talking a 15 minutes cab ride from Manhattan)!
We got there just in time to catch 10 minutes of Terror’s show before they went off stage (yeah, it’s a curse).
I was immediate bummed out over missing Maximum Penalty and most of Terror’s show, but I was going to see both bands in Philly two days later anyway so it didn’t kill me, and since Raff is sober Sally (her own words) these days she cheered me up handed by handing me all the drink tickets so I could be happy puppy and take care of the socialising.
This was my first night out after returning to NYC from spending Holidays in Norway so it was definitely great to catch up with friends and Terror did their thing in the absolute best way, even Raffaelle admit they sound great. Who would have guessed?!
Raff: I’m slowly turning you into a HC chick! More couch dives and Louboutins in the monitor please!

When I woke up the next day there was this huge buzz about a snow storm coming in from the Midwest.
I didn’t worry too much about the storm but was concerned weather or not the show with Ringworm, Terror and Maximum Penalty I planned on going to in Philly the next day would be cancelled.
So with my fingers crossed and still waiting for the “big storm” to hit us I went out for dinner with Raffaelle at PUKK which is this amazing tiny Vegetarian Thai restaurant on 1st Ave, between 5th and 4th street.

A dinner date with my absolute favourite gal at my absolute favourite Vegetarian Thai place to discuss Fridays shenanigans - GREAT!
The fresh roll with soy tamarind sauce and chopped peanuts is nothing but amazing - Oh my god, so good!!!!
The only thing on the menu I’m not too crazy about is the chicken(not real chicken), it’s a bit cheewie.
But everything else, especially the tofu, is heavenly and the sake cocktails are too!!! And the best thing – this place isn’t expensive!

The Classy Old Hags anno 2007
Photobucket

So while I enjoyed my delicious Village Sake Raffaelle was stuck with her green tea and I figured now was a good occasion to ask sober Sally how she experienced being at a HARDCORE show, IN Brooklyn, NOT drinking.
“Not bad, not bad at all” she replied with this overly enthusiastic look on her face (she might have fooled me on this one)
”The band was great, I met a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while and when I left I marveled at how easy it was to navigate down the stairs of Europa without banging into the walls back and forth the whole time”.
That’s my classy lassy! And I just noticed that Raffaelle blogged the Brooklyn expedition and mentioned my enthusiasm for hardcore slowly winning her over, so I’ll definitely work on that and who knows, maybe the queen of classy hags will become a regular show up at the NY hardcore shows?

So with that covered I asked Raffaelle what the hell happened to the storm everybody had been talking about?
She looked out the window: “Well…. I think we’re looking at it right now….”

The sidewalk was slightly covered in a thin blanket of something that looked like snow, and it never got any worse.. Quite a blizzard folks!!!!

2008: a retrospective…

   Join our Facebook Group

I started writing a blog about 2008, but it got way too long and way too personal so I’m doing my retrospective of 2008 with pictures instead.

Current listening: Roky Erickson - Stand for the Fire Demon

But first it’s time to be blunt for a second:
Except from 2004; the year I nearly got killed in a fire, divorced my husband (now ex-husband but still friend), moved into a punk house and just lived from day to day with no job, no money, no nothing I‘ll have to say that 2008 has definitely been the craziest, most miserable but also happiest and most memorable year of my life..

I fell in love, something I rarely do (read: never), and I didn’t handle the situation well at all. I blew it off by the speed of a vodka/cranberry cocktail swiping through the air.…
I moved to another country and not just one right across the border for Norway but one across the big pond.
Before moving to the US I travelled back and forth 8 times in 9 months and just to make thinks perfectly amazing and easy for myself I had a midlife crisis (or personal meltdown) and fell in love in the midst of all the travelling and very hectic and changing work situation..

Now looking back I think things went pretty well after all and instead of heading towards a personal decay I’m definitely a happy person.. Despite a few mind bugging things I’m actually happier now then I’ve been in a very long time..
So I guess the saying: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” actually is true, and I should probably be Hulk Hogan’s sidekick by now. *Ihaaa!!!*

NAMM in California:
At the airport on my way back to Norway after 3 weeks in NYC I had a little panic attack. I was not ready to leave NYC or the US already. I texted my German friend Yvette, who’s managing Dimmu Borgir, to see if she was going to NAMM. It turned out that she had booked her flight just an hour before I texted her. So I did the same, booked a flight from Oslo to LA at JFK airport just having enough time to go back to Oslo rest for two days and then off to LA.

Yvette picked me up at LAX airport. First we did a little shopping, dining and wining in Hollywood and then off to Anaheim.. I’d been so lucky to get a suite at the Hiltons, neighbour building to the convention center, but I actually only made it inside the center once during the 6 days we were in Anaheim. However my main reason for going wasn’t the convention but to take some time off from work, networking(the Hilton bar), hang out with friends and see the mighty SUICIDAL TENDENCIES!!!!

MARCH

SXSW in Austin, Texas:
MTV/Headbanger’s Ball was sponsoring the Nordic Metal Showcase together with Music Export Norway, so off to Austin. Me and Charlie travelled alone and hired camera operators in Austin.. It was crazy from the second we arrived and we did 33 interviews during these 5 days, lost our flight from Austin, then stuck for 2 more days in Houston because of a hurricane! Great, and I had two episodes of HBB and two episodes of Spanking New that had to be recorded in Stockholm before the Easter holiday! A big mess to say the least but we made it back home and taped those shows like never before!!

Himsa vs MTV Go-Cart race in Oslo, Norway:
I love Himsa’s video for the track Unleash Carnage and if it had been summer I’d invite the guys out on the Tennis field for an interview but April was pretty damn cold in Norway so I figured Go-cart would have to do. Pettibone threw in the towel after the first lap and after 3 laps Derek won a medal, a champagne shower on the winner pedestal and “Simply the best“ bursting out over the PA.
My intern Madeleine had the time of her life with these guys and raced along while I placed myself safely on the “side track”!

Before the first lap, amped as hell!

APRIL
First week of April and it was finally time to go back to NYC and the annual BNB bowl(earlier Superbowl of Hardcore.

BNB Bowl in New York:

The past years I’ve been under a curse that would make sure something happened to either delay or interrupt me from going to a Terror show. It’s been so bad that their manager made a joke and asked me to please not tell anyone I was going to see them at BNB because then something bad would happen to either me or the band.. Luckily no injuries or airline strikes this time, but Lufthansa managed to loose my luggage. So I was stuck waiting for it 24/7 for three days, the day of the show there was tons of complications, came late to venue, was a nightmare getting in, and when I finally made it inside Terror was half way through their set. I missed out a hell lot of great band this day but at least I got to see a few songs of Terror’s set, Madball and Agnostic Front and at the end of the day the event was a full success!

MAY
I flew in to Germany after recording Headbanger’s Ball and Spanking New in Sweden.
My friend Dirk picked me up at the airport in Dusseldorf and from there we drove to Dortmund. We had to wake up early next morning as we had a little drive over the border to Belgium, but Dirk started making some AMAZING mango vodkatinis and by the second he dug up his old HC 7 inches we knew the night was doomed and ended up with lots of sing alongs and couch dives in Dirks huuuuuuuge red couch!

Satyricon studio report and Jägermeister tour in LA:
I had already planned a week in LA as Satyricon were in studio there and we had a shoot for MTV but I figured I could need some time off and stayed for 2 weeks to combine vacation, work and midlife crisis.
I had a few days with intensive work other than that I spent most of my time going to shows, hanging with friends and chilling at my hotel by myself doing nothing. It was AMAZING and I learned to love LA as I got to see the more chill sides that I haven’t had time to explore and experience before.

A very moving and unexpected moment, and at some point my mom came up on stage as well, so there I was on stage with Agnostic Front AND my mom!
I have to thank the guys for this moment.. This turned out to be one of those days that I’ll NEVER forget!!

Moving to NYC:

So after 9 roundtrips to the US in 9 months it was about time to do the big MOVE!!
I arrived New Ark airport around 7pm, rushed over to Heidi’s and by 9 we were out at a bar meeting up with the rest. I was jet-lagged, wearing sweatpants but had a smashing night with my friends in the city I love so much and from now of was going to be my new home.

As expected Killing Time was awesome, and the crowd totally crazy!

Thanksgiving:

So it was time for my FIRST Thanksgiving in USA and I spent together with friends at Jorge’s from Merauder’s house. It was so nice, just a full day with lots of food, wine, music, card games and more food!
The 3 chef’s Dina, Stephanie and Erin made the best food ever, we played Uno which I was pretty damn good at!

And my new buddy Devin, Dina and Jorge’s son, thinks I’m super cool! Maybe because my friend Mike told him I’m a tough Viking from a land far up North and that’s probably why I also had to play Batman and Robin with him all night… And he’s pretty badass himself doing backing vocals on a track on the coming Merauder album!!!

About to skinny dip in Dina’s lovely cherry sauce!Photobucket

In between being extremely busy playing Batman and Robin (fighting against the Joker) I had time to sit down for a few, sip on my wine and pose for the master photographer(4 year old Devin)

I really believe the universe guides us towards certain situations and certain people, and then its up to ourself to figure things out and make it work - this being work situations, love, friendships or just life in general..
I just know that some persons were ment to be a part of my life from day one, and I’m so grateful I’ve found them!

Happy New Year!!!
