The clue is to be as secluded and secretive as possible. At least if the goal is to become talked about as a trendy hang out on Manhattan.
From the street La Esquina in Soho looks like any ordinary Mexican fast food joint – and if you don’t happen to be better informed, that’s where your La Esquina-experience will end. But, as is the case with many other hidden pearls of this city, you have to know about the secret door.
And if you manage to get past the bouncer (not the easiest feat in NY) your adventurous journey begins: Down a long, dark staircase, along a dark hallway, through a well-lit kitchen and another dark hallway – before you’ve reached your destination.

You can reserve a table for dinner, or you can just have a drink in the bar. If you’re coming just for drinks you’ll unfortunately have to go through the tiring procedure that seems to be a given rule in every other hip bar in New York; the bouncer will eye you up and down to gauge if your level of cool is high enough to let you in.
The menu is stocked with typical Mexican dishes, and the bar is filled with everything your heart (or throat) desires. You’re also free to step around the corner where another part of the restaurant is located, or you can seat yourself outside in the summer-time and watch the life of the city.
