Jay Z and Celine

Butter in NoHo was filled to the brim when they threw their fashion party this Monday.

Who’s the idiot on the photo putting his water bottle in front of Jay Z’s face?

Thanks to Vegard’s fashionable outfit (yes, Vegard Storm Pedersen is a stylist) Kjersti, Vegard and me managed to enter the night club “Butter” ahead of a mile-long queue. The club was stuffed with exciting people and the first person to pass us was Jared Leto. The biggest star in Butter that night was by the way Jay-Z, who’d just ditched Beyonce to head out partying after the Marc Jacobs feature during the Fashion Week currently on in New York. Wearing sunglasses and a red Yankees cap the artist seemed to have great fun while dancing to a host of familiar songs from his own last album American Gangster.

I decided to get a closer look at this Jay Z. Champagne, sweet drinks and gorgeous babes were all floating round Jay’s table. The star himself was guarded by scary guards in dark suits. I couldn’t help myself, and discreetly retreived the camera from my bag. I took a few pictures, but to my great disappointment I discovered that a bearded guy with glasses and wearing a grey suit was obscuring the successful hip-hop star, whom I would love to get a clear photo of. I allowed my flash to light up the room one final time before a guard gave me a strict look and told me to stop taking photos. I gave him my most innocent fawny look and a humble apology before I ran off back to Kjersti’s protective wings.

Covertly, we looked through the pictures. In a dark locale with a couple of GTs inside her system, Kjersti was convinced that the man with the glasses standing next to Jay Z on the photo was the very man we had said hi to earlier that night. Our conclusion; we needed to sidle up to this guy!

Shortly after we spotted what we assumed to be Jay Z’s friend, right next to us on the dance floor. We kept on small talking with the flashy gent while flirting and smiling (without getting anything remotely resembling an invitation to join Jay Z’s table in return). The super star was suddenly nowhere to be seen. We realized that we had to move on, and convinced our new bespectacled friend to join us to “Upstairs”, a club just around the bend in Soho. We didn’t see anything more of Beyonce’s better half, and kept on dancing until it was much too late.

The following morning my friend and I looked through yesterday’s pictures of Jay Z, and she became totally convinced that the man with glasses was Kanye West. I shook my head and told her that that was impossible. This was the guy me and Kjersti had gotten to know the same night. Later the same day, pretty drawn, I discovered something in the newspaper that I usually skim through every day on my way home from school. On the center page I saw photos of a bearded man in a grey suit wearing big, black glasses. The caption said: “Kanye West at Marc Jacobs.” I read on. Kanye West and Jay Z left for Butter just after the fashion show. I pulled up my camera, compared the photos, and suddenly realized that it was Kanye West standing next to Jay Z at the party - not the guy with the glasses (his spitting image) whom we’d been trying to impress all night …

Here’s the proof, I guess … The following day in New York Times
