In true retro style everything’s intact in this anchovise box in Nolita (by Soho).
Every day, around lunch, trendy New Yorkers are queueing up to an hour to get inside this chrome-covered diner. This isn’t only a “see and be seen”-place, even though it may seem that way by the ratio of cool people standing in line – here you’ll find tasty dishes for the entire family.

Lenny Kravitz produced a music video at Café Habana.
Inspired by the apparently immortal eighties, the main attraction of the ultimate diner is the corn cob. It’s served grilled from dusk till dawn with cheese, chili powder and a chunk of butter, just as big as you like. You can also order tacos, fish, classical Cuban sandwiches, roast and other food that fits well with rice and beans. Or plantain, a typical Latin American tradition. If your schedule is too tight to hit on a corn cob in one of the booths, you can always sneak around the corner and buy the same food from their take out menu.

Where: 229 Elizabeth street, at the corner of Prince street. (Opening hours 09am – 12pm)
Why: The best corn cobs of New York, and the highest ratio of Soho-hipsters per square feet.
